Nazi references in US politics

Introduction

A compilation of publicly reported statements, actions, imagery, associations and incidents involving Republican officials, candidates, party organizations, campaign personnel, and affiliated political groups. Sources are provided for each entry. Readers are encouraged to consult the original reporting and consider the full context.

How the filters work

1. Choosing chips

The chips are grouped: Section, Who, Place, Year, Topics. Pick as many as you like.

• Within a group, it’s “any of these” (or). Picking 2025 and 2024 shows items from either year.
• Between groups, it’s “and also” (and). Every group you use must match.
• Search words are one more “and”: every word or “quoted phrase” must appear.

Example: Year 2025 + Year 2024 + Who Donald Trump = items about Donald Trump from 2025 or 2024.

2. The numbers on the chips

• A number is how many items that chip would match, given your filters in all the other groups and your search.
• So choosing chips in a group never changes that group’s own numbers. It only changes the numbers in the other groups.
• A faded chip has 0: choosing it would leave nothing.
• Numbers within Who and Topics can add up to more than the total, because an item can have several tags.

3. The labels on each item

• They mirror the chips above. A lit label means that chip is chosen, and clicking one is the same as clicking the chip. That includes the year in the date.
• Every item you see already matches, so choosing a label never hides the item you clicked. It only changes which other items remain.
• Unchoosing a label hides its item only if other chips in the same group are still chosen and the item has none of them. If it was the only chip chosen in its group, that group stops filtering and more items appear.

4. Why some groups behave differently

• Section, Year, Place and Who normally have one value per item (one section, one year, at most one place, usually one person or group). So when two or more chips in one of these groups are chosen, unchoosing an item’s own label hides it, because nothing else chosen in that group matches it. Items with no year or place never match while that group has a choice.
• Topics are often several per item, so an item often stays after you unchoose one topic, because another chosen topic still matches it.

Example: Section “Pro-Nazi” and “Anti-Nazi” are both chosen. Unchoosing “Pro-Nazi” on a Pro-Nazi item hides it. But with Topics “Antisemitism” and “White nationalism” chosen, unchoosing “Antisemitism” on an item that has both topics keeps it, because “White nationalism” still matches.

Clear all removes every chip and the search words.
